Gurgaon to widen key service road, build foot overbridge near Atrium Place
Gurgaon approves road widening, FOB near Atrium Place

In a significant move to address growing congestion, Gurgaon authorities have greenlit a project to widen a crucial service road and build a pedestrian foot overbridge near the bustling Atrium Place commercial complex in Udyog Vihar Phase-5.

Key Approvals for Infrastructure Upgrade

The district road safety committee, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sonu Bhatt, has approved the widening of the existing two-lane service road connecting Shyam Chowk to Shankar Chowk into a three-lane thoroughfare. This decision comes as a direct response to the anticipated surge in vehicular and pedestrian movement expected from the upcoming DLF-built Atrium Place, which is projected to house numerous offices and attract heavy daily footfall.

A joint inspection involving officials from HSIIDC, NHAI, Gurgaon Traffic Police, and DLF preceded the approval. Alongside the road expansion, the committee has also sanctioned the construction of a grade-separated foot overbridge (FOB) at the site. This FOB is specifically designed to safely channel the large number of pedestrians moving between Cyber Hub and Udyog Vihar, where thousands currently cross the road, necessitating traffic marshals during peak hours.

Broader Road Safety Measures Implemented

The committee meeting addressed multiple traffic and safety concerns across the city. To improve traffic flow at Wazirabad Chowk, permission was granted to remove a tree obstructing the middle of the road. Reflective tape will be installed on trees near footpaths to enhance visibility.

In preparation for winter fog and low visibility, the ADC directed all road construction agencies to implement critical safety measures. These include the proper construction and marking of speed breakers, and the installation of reflective tape on transport vehicles and cement jersey barriers. Officials were also instructed to prune trees along major routes to ensure smooth traffic movement and enforce traffic rules more strictly.

Citizen Engagement and Additional Safety Steps

The administration has reinforced its commitment to public involvement in road safety. Citizens can now report issues like faulty streetlights, dark spots, or damaged roads directly to the authorities by calling the helpline number 1033. This initiative aims to ensure timely action by the concerned departments.

Further pedestrian safety measures are being introduced, with speed calming mechanisms planned for Golf Course Road and other key locations. In a related development, Sulabh and MCG have been directed to provide public toilet facilities under the flyover at IFFCO Chowk, addressing basic civic amenities.

The land for Atrium Place, adjacent to the income tax office, has a notable history. It was purchased by DLF through an HSIIDC e-auction for Rs 1,496 crore in 2018. Interestingly, a part of this plot was originally earmarked for a multi-level parking facility and a community centre. The foundation stone for the parking project was laid in 2004 by the then chief minister, but it never materialized, leading HSIIDC to eventually sell the land.
