The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has clarified that applicants under the Gruha Jyothi scheme will not be denied the benefit for lack of a caste certificate or ration card. The department emphasized that while providing documents can facilitate the process, submission of all documents is not mandatory.
Scheme Details and Clarification
Gruha Jyothi, a flagship scheme of the Karnataka government, aims to provide free electricity up to 200 units per month to eligible households. Initial reports suggested that applicants needed to submit a caste certificate and ration card to avail the benefit, causing concern among many residents. Bescom officials have now issued a statement clarifying that these documents are not compulsory.
“Providing all documents is not mandatory but only helpful,” a Bescom spokesperson said. The department reiterated that the scheme’s primary eligibility criteria are based on the applicant’s residential status and income, not on caste or ration card possession.
Impact on Applicants
The clarification is expected to ease the application process for thousands of residents, particularly those from economically weaker sections who may not have these documents readily available. The scheme, which was launched earlier this year, has seen a high volume of applications. According to Bescom, over 1.5 million households have already applied for the subsidy.
Officials also advised applicants to ensure they provide accurate details regarding their electricity connection and income to avoid delays. The department has set up help desks across Bengaluru to assist with the application process.
Background and Implementation
The Gruha Jyothi scheme was announced in the state budget with an allocation of ₹1,200 crore. It targets households with an annual income of less than ₹2.5 lakh. Beneficiaries will receive a subsidy on their electricity bills, with the government reimbursing Bescom for the free units consumed.
Bescom has urged applicants to apply through the official portal or designated centers. The deadline for applications has been extended to August 31, 2026.
