Gorakhpur's Goddhaiya Drain Rejuvenation Project Nears Completion to Combat Waterlogging
In Gorakhpur, the persistent issue of waterlogging affecting nearly half of the city is poised for significant relief ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. This improvement is attributed to the near-completion of the ambitious Goddhaiya drain rejuvenation project, a key initiative prioritized by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Project Progress and Timeline
District Magistrate Deepak Meena has announced that the Rs 495-crore project has achieved an impressive 82% physical progress. The target for full completion is set for June 2026, marking a crucial milestone in urban infrastructure development for the region.
Once finalized, this project is expected to bring major relief to approximately 15 wards located on the city's northern fringe. An estimated population of 3.5 lakh residents will benefit from reduced waterlogging and improved sanitation conditions.
Transformation of a Neglected Drain
The Goddhaiya drain, which had suffered from decades of neglect and encroachment, was on the verge of disappearing entirely. However, it is now undergoing a comprehensive transformation through a detailed plan that includes multiple engineering and environmental interventions.
Key components of the project include:
- Construction of a 9.25-kilometer-long concrete drain to enhance water flow and capacity.
- Development of a 38 MLD (Million Liters per Day) sewage treatment plant (STP) to process wastewater effectively.
- Installation of 17.94 kilometers of intercepting sewerlines to capture and redirect sewage.
- Building of 18 bridges and culverts to support infrastructure and prevent blockages.
- Interception of 130 drains to consolidate and manage water sources efficiently.
- Setup of 15 main pumping stations with a combined capacity of 61 MLD to handle excess water during heavy rains.
Current Status and Achievements
Officials from Jal Nigam (urban) have provided updates on the project's current status, highlighting substantial progress in various areas:
- Approximately 8.35 kilometers of the drain has already been constructed, ensuring a solid foundation for the system.
- Around 7.1 kilometers of sewerlines have been laid, facilitating better sewage management.
- The sewage treatment plant is over 83% complete, indicating advanced stages of development.
- Eleven culverts have been finished, with work on the remaining structures progressing rapidly to meet deadlines.
Environmental and Community Impact
The project is designed to address both pollution and waterlogging issues across catchment areas. Sewage generated from several key localities, including Shahpur, Basharatpur, Rapti Nagar, and Lohia Nagar, will be treated at the STP before being discharged into Ramgarh Tal.
This process is expected to significantly reduce pollution levels in water bodies and prevent waterlogging, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents and protecting the local ecosystem. The comprehensive approach ensures a sustainable solution to long-standing urban challenges in Gorakhpur.
