Delhi Zoo's Rs 400 Crore Modernisation Plan to Install Glass Panels for Better Wildlife Viewing
Delhi Zoo's Rs 400 Crore Modernisation Plan with Glass Panels

New Delhi: The Delhi Zoo is poised for a significant transformation under a comprehensive Rs 400-crore redevelopment plan, aimed at enhancing visitor experience and animal welfare. A key highlight of this modernisation initiative is the installation of glass viewing panels at animal enclosures, designed to offer visitors a clearer and more immersive view of wildlife, moving beyond traditional barriers.

Comprehensive Overhaul Plan Details

According to an official from the Central Zoo Authority, the redevelopment plan encompasses a wide range of upgrades beyond just the glass panels. The project includes redesigned entrances to improve accessibility, enhanced traffic circulation to reduce congestion, reconstructed animal habitats for better living conditions, and expanded veterinary facilities to ensure top-notch healthcare for the zoo's inhabitants.

Timeline and Approval Process

Work on this ambitious overhaul is scheduled to commence in February, pending the final approval from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The official noted that the Centre has already granted in-principle approval for the Rs 400 crore investment, and the Delegated Investment Board, a government body responsible for clearing major public infrastructure projects, has largely agreed with the proposed changes.

This agreement paves the way for formal clearance, with funding for the project to be drawn through this established mechanism. The redevelopment proposal was recently presented before the board, marking a crucial step forward in the zoo's modernisation journey.

Enhancing Visitor Experience and Animal Welfare

The introduction of glass viewing panels is expected to revolutionise how visitors interact with wildlife, providing unobstructed views that foster a deeper connection with the animals. This move aligns with global best practices in zoo design, prioritising both educational value and animal comfort.

With these upgrades, the Delhi Zoo aims to set a new standard for zoological parks in India, blending modern amenities with conservation efforts to create a sustainable and engaging environment for all.
