In a major crackdown following the tragic Goa nightclub fire, the Delhi government has initiated rigorous citywide inspections of hospitality venues to enforce fire safety compliance. The drive, launched ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, has already led to the closure of five establishments for serious violations.
Citywide Inspections in Wake of Goa Tragedy
The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) began its intensive inspection campaign on Thursday, December 19, 2025. This proactive move comes more than a week after a devastating fire at a nightclub in Goa on December 6 claimed 25 lives. The Delhi Home Department stated that the inspections are being conducted under Rule 33 of the Delhi Fire Service Rules, 2010.
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood emphasized that the government took prompt cognisance of the risks highlighted by the Goa incident. "Safety of Delhi’s residents is of utmost priority," Sood said. "With increased public footfall in restaurants, hotels and clubs during the festive season, strict adherence to fire safety norms becomes essential."
Inspection Findings and Actions Taken
As of Wednesday, December 18, fire safety officials had inspected a total of 74 premises across the national capital. The initial findings reveal a mixed picture of compliance:
- 45 establishments were found to be following the prescribed fire safety norms.
- 24 establishments were identified as non-compliant and were issued formal notices.
- 5 establishments faced immediate closure orders due to what authorities described as "serious violations" of safety standards.
The checks are comprehensive, focusing on critical areas such as:
- Verification and functionality of firefighting equipment.
- Unobstructed accessibility to all emergency exits.
- Overall compliance with building by-laws specifically related to fire prevention and safety measures.
Festive Season Safety Takes Centre Stage
Minister Sood clarified that the drive was initiated in view of the significantly increased footfall expected at hotels, restaurants, pubs, and clubs during the year-end festive period. The government aims to prevent any similar tragedy by ensuring all venues meet the highest safety standards before the celebrations peak.
"Taking cognisance of a recent tragic incident at a night club in Goa, the Delhi government has initiated prompt and intensive inspections of fire safety equipment in hotels, restaurants and similar establishments," the Minister reiterated. The inspection drive is ongoing and is expected to cover a large number of public gathering spaces in the coming days.
