Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Blames Past Govts for Waterlogging

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has stated that the persistent problems of waterlogging and pollution in the national capital are legacy issues inherited from previous governments. She asserted that her administration is actively working to find permanent solutions to these long-standing civic challenges.

Inspection at Sunehri Nala

On 16 December 2025, CM Rekha Gupta conducted a surprise inspection of the ongoing desilting work at the Sunehri Nala in the city. The visit was aimed at assessing the preparedness of the drainage system ahead of potential future rains and to ensure that pre-monsoon cleaning work was proceeding as planned.

Criticism of Previous Administrations

During her inspection, the Chief Minister did not mince words while addressing the historical neglect of the city's infrastructure. She squarely blamed the previous governments led by the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the current state of pollution and chronic drainage issues plaguing Delhi.

Gupta highlighted that years of inadequate planning and poor maintenance under these past regimes have resulted in the systemic failures that cause severe waterlogging even after moderate rainfall. She linked the choked drainage system directly to the pollution crisis, as stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for diseases and contributes to environmental degradation.

A Pledge for Action and Solutions

The Chief Minister emphasized that her government views resolving these interconnected issues as a top priority. She stated that simply blaming the past is not enough, and her team is now focused on implementing effective, long-term measures.

The desilting of major drains like Sunehri Nala is part of this immediate action plan. The broader strategy is expected to involve a comprehensive review of the city's entire drainage network, investment in modern cleaning technology, and stricter enforcement to prevent the dumping of waste and construction debris into waterways.

Gupta's message was clear: while the problems of waterlogging and pollution are a difficult inheritance, her administration is committed to breaking the cycle and delivering tangible improvements for the residents of Delhi.
