Strike Enters Third Day, Commuters Face Hardship
The strike by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employees entered its third day on 21 June 2026, severely affecting bus services across Mumbai. Commuters, especially students and office-goers, have been facing significant inconvenience as most buses remain off the roads.
According to a PTI report, the strike involves permanent and temporary staff as well as most employees of wet-lease operators. The protest has brought the city's public bus network to a near standstill, with only a limited number of buses operated by private contractors running on select routes.
100 Buses Deployed for NEET Aspirants
In a relief measure, the BEST administration has deployed 100 buses specifically for NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) students who need to reach their exam centers. The buses are operating on designated routes to ensure that medical aspirants are not unduly affected by the strike.
"We have arranged 100 buses to help NEET students travel to their exam centers. These buses are running on time and following strict schedules," a BEST official said. The move aims to minimize disruption for over 1.5 lakh students appearing for the exam in Mumbai.
Demands of Striking Workers
The striking employees are demanding a revision in wages, regularization of temporary workers, and better working conditions. They have also raised concerns over the privatization of bus operations and delays in salary payments.
"We have been waiting for our demands to be addressed for months. The management has not shown any willingness to negotiate," said a union leader representing the striking workers. The union has threatened to continue the strike until their demands are met.
Impact on Daily Life
The strike has left thousands of commuters stranded, leading to long queues at railway stations and autorickshaw stands. Many have resorted to using private vehicles or ride-hailing services, causing traffic congestion in several parts of the city.
"I had to wait for over an hour for a bus this morning. Finally, I shared an auto with three others to reach my office," said Priya Sharma, a commuter from Andheri. The situation is expected to continue until an agreement is reached between the union and the management.
Government's Response
The Maharashtra government has urged both parties to resolve the issue amicably. Transport Minister Anil Parab stated that the government is in talks with BEST officials and union representatives to find a solution.
"We are making efforts to end the strike at the earliest. The deployment of buses for NEET students is a temporary measure. We appeal to the workers to resume duties while negotiations are ongoing," Parab said.
