Coimbatore Corporation Kicks Off Traffic Island Initiative with Rs 5 Crore Allocation

The Coimbatore City Corporation has officially launched preliminary efforts to enhance road safety and traffic flow by initiating comprehensive traffic studies at key junctions across the city. This move marks the first step in a major project aimed at constructing traffic islands, with an initial budget of Rs 5 crore allocated specifically for this purpose.

Prioritizing 20 Key Locations for Immediate Action

According to Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran, the civic body had initially identified 58 potential locations for junction improvements. However, after careful evaluation, the list has been narrowed down to 20 priority sites where traffic islands will be established on an urgent basis. "Our primary focus is on the Lanka Corner Junction improvement," Prabakaran stated. "We plan to implement a holistic approach here, including the construction of footpaths and drainage systems towards the railway station and town hall. This project will be executed through a collaborative model involving both government and private partnerships."

Public-Private Partnership Model for Enhanced Infrastructure

The commissioner elaborated on the division of responsibilities within this partnership framework. While the Coimbatore Corporation will handle the core design and construction of the traffic islands, private firms will be entrusted with additional installations such as statues and beautification elements. This strategy aims to leverage private sector expertise and resources to complement municipal efforts, ensuring a more efficient and aesthetically pleasing outcome.

Comprehensive Traffic Studies and Trial Runs Underway

A senior corporation official confirmed that traffic studies have already commenced at the shortlisted locations. These studies will be followed by a series of trial runs conducted in close coordination with the city traffic police. The insights gained from these assessments will directly inform the final design and placement of the traffic islands, ensuring they are tailored to the specific needs of each junction.

Key Junctions Targeted for Improvement

The 20 priority locations selected for this initiative include several high-traffic areas across Coimbatore. Notable among them are:

  • Sanganoor-Kannapanagar Junction
  • Thaneerpandal S-Bend
  • Edayarpalayam
  • Athipalayam
  • Saradha Mill Road
  • Perur Road-Selvapuram Junction
  • Puttuvikki Road

This project represents a significant step forward in Coimbatore's urban development plans, aiming to reduce congestion, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance the overall traffic management system in the city. The corporation's proactive approach, backed by substantial funding and strategic partnerships, underscores its commitment to creating a more navigable and safer urban environment for all residents.
