Chandigarh Completes House Listing Phase for Census 2021
Chandigarh Finishes House Listing for Census

Chandigarh has successfully completed the house listing phase for the Census 2021, a crucial step towards the comprehensive population enumeration. The exercise covered over 3 lakh households across the city, including residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. The census officials ensured that every structure was accurately mapped and recorded, with details such as the number of rooms, amenities, and ownership status.

Completion of House Listing

The house listing operation, which began in April 2020, faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the UT Administration expedited the process by deploying additional staff and adopting digital tools. The census authorities have verified the data to ensure accuracy and completeness. Commissioner of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Anindita Mitra, stated that the house listing is a foundational exercise for the census and will help in planning urban development and resource allocation.

Details of the Exercise

During the house listing, enumerators visited each household to collect information on the building's characteristics, including its use, construction material, and available facilities like electricity, water supply, and sanitation. The data also captured the number of families residing in each building. A total of 1,200 enumerators and 200 supervisors were involved in the operation. They used mobile applications to record data in real-time, reducing errors and improving efficiency.

Next Phase: Population Enumeration

With the house listing complete, the UT Administration is now preparing for the population enumeration phase, scheduled to begin in February 2022. This phase will involve collecting detailed demographic information, including age, sex, education, occupation, and migration patterns. The census data will be used for policy formulation, resource distribution, and electoral delimitation. Citizens are urged to cooperate with enumerators and provide accurate information.

Significance of Census

The Census of India is conducted every ten years and provides a comprehensive snapshot of the country's population. It is the primary source of data for government planning and decision-making. The 2021 census is particularly important as it will provide insights into the impact of the pandemic on population dynamics, urbanization, and migration. Chandigarh's timely completion of the house listing sets a benchmark for other cities.

The UT Administration has also emphasized the importance of data privacy and security. All information collected is confidential and used solely for statistical purposes. The census data is protected under the Census Act, 1948, and any breach is punishable by law.
