Bihar District Magistrate Oversees Preparations for Major Religious Fair
In a significant administrative move, District Magistrate (DM) Kundan Kumar of Nalanda district conducted a comprehensive review of the preparations for the upcoming Malmas Mela 2026. The high-level meeting, held on Saturday in Rajgir, focused on ensuring the smooth and safe execution of this major religious event scheduled from May 17 to June 15, 2026.
Religious Significance and Expected Footfall
The Malmas Mela, also known as the Adhik Maas Mela, is a month-long religious fair of immense spiritual importance in Hinduism. Occurring once every three years during the Hindu lunar month of Malmas, it attracts lakhs of devotees from across India. Pilgrims primarily visit to take a holy dip in the sacred Brahm Kund, renowned for its natural hot water springs believed to possess purifying properties.
Officials anticipate an exceptionally large turnout this year, with several lakh pilgrims expected to participate. Peak days are projected to see particularly heavy footfall, necessitating robust planning and infrastructure.
Administrative and Financial Preparations
To facilitate timely and organized arrangements, the district administration has successfully completed the auction of the fair premises. Contracts totaling over Rs 7 crore have been awarded to bidders responsible for managing shops, food stalls, and various temporary commercial establishments within the mela area. This strategic move aims to streamline operations, regulate services, and enhance the overall visitor experience by ensuring quality and accountability from vendors.
Enhanced Safety Measures Post-Stampede
The review meeting took serious cognizance of the recent tragic stampede at Maa Sheetla Mandir in Maghra village, Nalanda district, where lapses in crowd management resulted in nine fatalities and multiple injuries. Drawing critical lessons from this incident, the administration has resolved to prioritize stringent crowd control and comprehensive safety protocols for the Malmas Mela.
DM Kundan Kumar issued explicit directives to officials to ensure all-encompassing arrangements covering multiple facets of public safety and convenience. Key areas of focus include security, traffic management, emergency medical response, sanitation, drinking water supply, electricity, healthcare facilities, accommodation, and food services.
Detailed Operational Plan
The administration outlined a multi-layered plan to manage the event effectively:
- Personnel Deployment: Adequate deployment of magistrates, police personnel, women police, and trained volunteers will be ensured across the entire mela area to maintain order and assist devotees.
- Surveillance and Monitoring: Sensitive locations and crowd hotspots will be placed under continuous surveillance using CCTV cameras and drone technology. Strict monitoring of all entry and exit points will be enforced to regulate人流.
- Infrastructure and Facilities: A suite of visitor-centric facilities will be established, including:
- Traffic diversion plans and designated parking zones to manage vehicular movement.
- Medical camps and ambulances on standby for emergency healthcare.
- Help desks and lost-and-found centers to assist pilgrims.
- Subsidized food counters to provide affordable meals.
- Digital facilities incorporating AI-based assistance, dedicated mobile applications, and a comprehensive website for real-time information and support.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from various government departments, underscoring the coordinated effort required for this large-scale event. The preparations reflect a determined approach to balance religious fervor with public safety, aiming to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure a spiritually fulfilling experience for all attendees.
