Mumbai: Facing criticism over inadequate response during power outages, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan. Key measures include setting up a dedicated call centre and hiring temporary staff to address grievances promptly.
Staff Shortage Acknowledged
Officials admitted to a significant staff shortage in the power supply division, with approximately 150 employees retiring each year since 2012. This has strained the utility's ability to handle breakdowns and complaints during the rainy season.
Previous Monsoon Measures
In previous monsoons, BEST had hired nearly 800 casual labourers to manage power outages and attend to consumer complaints. The new plan aims to streamline these efforts through better coordination and a centralized response system.
The announcement comes as the city braces for another monsoon season, with residents demanding faster and more efficient service. BEST has assured that the dedicated call centre will operate round-the-clock to address power-related issues.
