Bengaluru to Launch Pedal Boating in 10 Lakes for Eco-Tourism and Revenue Generation

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce recreational boating facilities in 10 lakes across the city. This initiative aims to promote eco-tourism while generating essential revenue for the upkeep and infrastructure development of these vital water bodies.

Eco-Friendly Approach with Pedal Boats

In a move to protect the delicate aquatic ecosystems, officials have decided to permit only pedal boats, explicitly banning motorized vessels. A senior GBA official emphasized that motorized boats can cause harm through pollution and disturbance to wildlife, making pedal boats a sustainable choice for this project.

List of Lakes Selected for Boating

The lakes identified for the initial phase of this boating initiative include:

  • Ulsoor Lake
  • Kaggadasapura Lake
  • Nayandahalli Lake
  • Sankey Tank
  • Yelahanka Lake
  • Rachenahalli Lake
  • Vengaiah Lake
  • Rampura Lake
  • Begur Lake
  • Madiwala Lake

These locations were chosen based on their accessibility, size, and potential to attract visitors, offering residents and tourists a unique way to experience Bengaluru's natural beauty.

Collaboration and Implementation Strategy

The tourism department will spearhead the introduction of boating facilities, working in close collaboration with the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority. This partnership ensures that conservation efforts are integrated into the tourism activities, balancing recreational use with environmental protection.

"One of the main objectives is to generate revenue for maintenance and infrastructure expenses of lakes," the official stated. The funds raised from boating fees will be reinvested into lake conservation, helping to cover costs for cleaning, desilting, and enhancing amenities around these water bodies.

Future Expansion Plans

Depending on public response and operational success, the GBA is considering a significant expansion of this project. Boating could potentially be extended to up to 100 lakes across Bengaluru, transforming the city's lake network into a major eco-tourism hub. This phased approach allows for careful monitoring of environmental impacts and community feedback before scaling up.

This initiative not only aims to provide recreational opportunities but also to raise awareness about the importance of lake conservation in urban areas. By engaging citizens through activities like boating, the GBA hopes to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility towards preserving these natural resources for future generations.
