Amritsar MP Aujla Calls for Central Intervention in LPG Distribution Irregularities
Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla has formally written to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, seeking urgent central action to address serious irregularities in LPG distribution and widespread consumer harassment in Amritsar. This move comes amid growing concerns over the transparency and efficiency of fuel supply systems in the region.
Persistent Consumer Difficulties Despite Government Assurances
In his detailed letter, Aujla emphasized that despite repeated assurances from both the government and oil companies regarding the adequate availability of LPG and PNG, consumers on the ground continue to face significant and ongoing difficulties. He pointed out that these issues are undermining public trust and causing undue hardship for residents.
Specific irregularities highlighted by the MP include:
- Gas agencies booking LPG cylinders without obtaining proper consent from consumers.
- Individuals receiving delivery confirmation messages for refills they never requested or authorized.
- Persistent delays in cylinder deliveries, even though the mandated refill cycle is set at 25 days.
Concerns Over Digital System Integrity and Transparency
Aujla expressed serious concerns about the integrity of the current distribution system, particularly in light of the introduction of digital mechanisms such as the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC). He noted that many consumers are not receiving timely deliveries, and the system's transparency is being compromised by these malpractices.
The MP stressed that such practices not only violate consumer rights but also raise questions about the effectiveness of digital safeguards intended to streamline and secure the distribution process.
Key Recommendations for Systemic Improvements
To address these critical issues, Aujla has urged the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to implement several key measures:
- Strict enforcement of the DAC-based SMS authentication system to ensure that only authorized bookings and deliveries are processed.
- Establishment of a fixed delivery timeline for all booked cylinders, with penalties for agencies that fail to comply.
- Creation of a robust monitoring mechanism to oversee the functioning of gas agencies and prevent further irregularities.
Additionally, he recommended the introduction of a GPS-based doorstep delivery verification system. This technology would ensure that cylinders are delivered only to registered addresses, thereby curbing diversion, black marketing, and unauthorized deliveries that contribute to consumer harassment.
Broader Implications for Consumer Rights and Fuel Supply
This appeal by Amritsar MP Gurjeet Aujla underscores a broader national issue regarding the reliability of essential fuel supplies and the protection of consumer rights. As digital systems become more integrated into public services, ensuring their proper implementation and oversight is crucial to maintaining public confidence and preventing exploitation.
The response from the central government and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for handling similar complaints across other regions in India.
