Ahmedabad Approves New 100 MLD Water Plant to Meet Rising Demand
Ahmedabad Approves New 100 MLD Water Plant for Growth

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Greenlights New Water Treatment Facility

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has taken a significant step to bolster the city's water infrastructure. In response to anticipated growth, the water and sewerage committee has approved the construction of a new 100 million liters per day water treatment plant. This project, with an estimated cost of Rs 48.5 crore, aims to address future drinking water demands driven by development along the Sardar Patel Ring Road corridor from Vastral to Kamod in eastern Ahmedabad.

Addressing Future Water Needs

Dilip Bagaria, chairman of the water and sewerage committee, highlighted the existing infrastructure. A 200 MLD water treatment plant at Raska has been operational since 2010, supplying treated water to distribution stations in the city's eastern and southern zones. The raw water source capacity at Raska is 300 MLD, and the 2,100mm pipeline from Raska to Ahmedabad can handle up to 300 MLD. However, with planned growth in the Vastral-to-Kamod stretch, the civic body recognized the need for additional capacity.

Logistical Challenges and Planning

Officials noted that space constraints at the Raska site have posed challenges, necessitating coordination with the government for land acquisition. The new 100 MLD plant is planned to be built adjacent to the existing water treatment facility. This strategic location leverages the current infrastructure while expanding capacity to meet rising demand. The approval underscores the municipal corporation's proactive approach to urban planning and resource management.

Key Points:

  • Approval Date: The proposal was approved on Friday by the water and sewerage committee.
  • Cost: Estimated at Rs 48.5 crore for the new plant.
  • Capacity: Adds 100 MLD to the existing 200 MLD at Raska.
  • Purpose: To support development along the Sardar Patel Ring Road corridor.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure sustainable water supply as Ahmedabad continues to expand, particularly in its eastern regions. The municipal corporation's focus on infrastructure development aims to prevent future shortages and support the city's growth trajectory.
