UP Electoral Roll: 2.89 Crore Voters Removed in Draft

In a major electoral roll clean-up, Uttar Pradesh's draft voter list has seen the removal of approximately 2.89 crore names. The state's Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, announced the figures on Tuesday, detailing the outcomes of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Massive Clean-Up: The Numbers Behind the Revision

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, CEO Navdeep Rinwa provided a detailed breakdown of the revision process. The Election Commission received a staggering 12.5 crore claims and objections during the exercise. The removal of 2.89 crore voters was attributed to several key factors.

46.23 lakh voters were identified as deceased. A significant portion, 2.17 crore25.47 lakh duplicate entries were found where voters' names appeared in more than one location.

Out of a total of 15.44 crore voters, the names of 12.55 crore voters (81.30%) have been successfully retained in the draft electoral roll following the SIR.

Revised Timeline and Urgent Call to Voters

The final voter list under the Special Intensive Revision will be officially published on March 6, 2026. Rinwa issued an urgent appeal to all citizens, urging them to verify their enrollment details promptly.

"Voters should check their details by entering their EPIC number on the official website. I strongly urge voters to do so," Rinwa stated. He clarified the next step for those not on the list: "If their name is not available, they should fill out Form 6 for inclusion."

Extended Deadlines and the Path Forward

The SIR exercise in Uttar Pradesh has experienced multiple deadline extensions. The Election Commission had previously extended the publication of the draft electoral roll by one week. With January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date, the draft roll is now set for publication on January 6, instead of the earlier December 31 deadline.

According to the revised schedule, the period for filing claims and objections will run from January 6 to February 6, 2026. The entire revision process has seen its timeline adjusted, with the initial enumeration deadline of December 4 being extended twice.

This comprehensive revision aims to create a more accurate and updated electoral roll, ensuring the integrity of the democratic process in India's most populous state.
