Nagpur Civic Polls: 511 Booths Marked Sensitive, Security Triples Since 2017
Nagpur: 511 sensitive booths for NMC polls, security triples

In a significant ramp-up of security measures, the Nagpur civic administration has identified a staggering 511 polling stations as "sensitive" ahead of the upcoming Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections. This figure marks a dramatic increase, being over three times higher than the 162 booths categorized similarly during the 2017 civic polls, indicating heightened concerns over law and order and potential disturbances on voting day.

Surge Reflects Urban Growth and Scrutiny

The sharp rise in sensitive booths is attributed to both the expanding urban footprint of Nagpur and increased vigilance by enforcement agencies. While the total number of polling booths has grown from around 2,700 in 2017 to 3,004 this year, the proportion labeled sensitive has surged. Officials are quick to clarify that the higher number is not a cause for public alarm but rather a demonstration of "preventive preparedness." The aim is to reassure citizens that voting will be conducted in a peaceful, orderly, and transparent manner.

The classification followed multiple rounds of rigorous review. Each booth was meticulously mapped based on historical data, including past incidents of nuisance, crowd density, local disputes, and areas with mixed-population clusters that have witnessed tension or complaints of voter intimidation in earlier elections. "History of nuisance, vulnerability of voters and the layout of dense localities are key parameters," explained a senior officer involved in the process.

Zone-Wise Breakdown and Security Blueprint

The administration has provided a zone-wise breakdown of the sensitive booths. Leading the list is the Gandhibagh zone with 100 sensitive booths, followed closely by Lakadganj (98), Satranjipura (86), Hanuman Nagar (66), Ashi Nagar (53), Laxmi Nagar (33), Dhantoli (32), Nehru Nagar (22), and Mangalwari (20). Many of these locations have previously reported issues like crowding, disputes during voting, or repeated complaints.

To ensure strict surveillance, the administration will deploy web-casting facilities at over 200 booths, enabling real-time monitoring from a central control room. This number may potentially rise to around 260 based on final ground assessments. The security blueprint also includes the deployment of extra police personnel, mobile patrolling units, and dedicated quick response teams across all identified sensitive locations.

Political Reactions and the Logistics Challenge

Political parties have largely welcomed the stricter monitoring regime but have emphasized the need for uniform enforcement across all zones to prevent any perception of bias. Independent candidates have expressed concerns that a tense local atmosphere could discourage voter turnout unless authorities maintain a highly visible and robust policing presence.

With election symbols distributed and door-to-door campaigning at its peak, the administrative focus has firmly shifted to election-day logistics. The paramount challenge will be balancing efficient crowd management with voter comfort, ensuring that long queues, narrow lanes, and high-density neighbourhoods do not become flashpoints for volatility.

If the extensive surveillance and security plan is executed effectively, officials believe the city can avoid a repeat of untoward incidents from past elections. However, with 511 booths already on the high-alert watch-list, the Nagpur civic polls are poised to unfold under one of the most stringent security and monitoring grids the city has ever witnessed.
