Shillong: The National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA)-2.0 on Wednesday unanimously decided to field James PK Sangma of the NPP as its candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya. The election for the seat is scheduled to take place on June 18.
Resolution Adopted at Meeting
A resolution endorsing the common candidate was adopted during a meeting of parliamentary party leaders from all MDA constituents, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The meeting aimed to finalize a consensus candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election.
Consensus Building Process
United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and MLA Paul Lyngdoh explained the decision-making process. “Since various parties had proposed various names of individuals belonging to the respective political parties and there being no point of consensus on a single name, it was decided to follow the established convention of endorsing the proposal put forward by the largest constituent (NPP),” he said.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized that the candidate is not merely a party nominee but represents the entire alliance. “It is important to note that the candidate which we are proposing now is not a political party candidate but it has been adopted as a resolution as the MDA-II’s candidate,” he stated.
Nomination and Background
James PK Sangma is expected to submit his nomination papers on June 5. He is the elder brother of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and a three-time MLA from the Dadenggre assembly constituency in West Garo Hills. At 50 years old, James Sangma had a narrow defeat in the 2023 assembly election, losing to Rupa M Marak of the Trinamool Congress by just seven votes.
