Kerala MLA Anvar Vows to Shave Head If Defeated in Beypore

Kerala MLA PV Anvar has made a bold promise ahead of the Beypore assembly by-election, vowing to shave his head if he loses the contest. The independent candidate, who is backed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), challenged his main rival, Riyas of the United Democratic Front (UDF), to a similar wager.

Anvar's Challenge

Addressing a public meeting in Beypore on Tuesday, Anvar said, "I am so confident of victory that I am ready to shave my head if I lose. Let Riyas also agree to do the same if he loses." The sitting MLA from Nilambur constituency, Anvar is contesting the Beypore seat, which fell vacant after the death of UDF MLA Purushan Kadalundi.

Political Significance

The Beypore by-election, scheduled for November 13, is seen as a crucial test for both the LDF and UDF in Kerala. Anvar, a former Congress leader who joined the LDF, has been a vocal critic of the UDF. He accused Riyas of being a "parachute candidate" who has no roots in the constituency.

Riyas, a young leader from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), dismissed Anvar's challenge, calling it a publicity stunt. "Elections are about issues, not gimmicks. The people of Beypore will vote for development, not for such theatrics," he said.

Campaign Heat

The campaign for the by-election has intensified, with both sides engaging in heated exchanges. Anvar has been highlighting his work in Nilambur, while Riyas has focused on local issues such as infrastructure and employment. The BJP has also fielded a candidate, but the main contest is expected to be between Anvar and Riyas.

Anvar's head-shaving pledge has added a quirky element to the campaign, drawing attention from voters and media alike. However, political analysts caution that such stunts may not necessarily translate into votes.

The by-election is being closely watched as a barometer of public mood ahead of the 2026 Kerala assembly elections. A win for Anvar would strengthen the LDF's position, while a UDF victory would boost the opposition's morale.
