Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, bringing much-needed respite from the scorching heatwave that had gripped the region for weeks. The sudden downpour, accompanied by strong winds, led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic snarls on major roads. However, residents welcomed the rain as temperatures dropped by several degrees, offering relief from the oppressive heat.
Impact of the Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast thundershowers for the day, and the rain arrived in the afternoon, catching many commuters off guard. Areas including Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, and Saket witnessed heavy showers, while parts of Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad also experienced similar weather conditions. The rain led to a significant drop in temperature, with the maximum temperature expected to settle around 34 degrees Celsius, down from the recent highs of over 40 degrees.
Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions
Several roads in the national capital were waterlogged, causing inconvenience to commuters. The Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories for motorists to avoid stretches near Minto Bridge, Pul Prahladpur, and the Ring Road due to water accumulation. Commuters reported long delays and diversions, particularly during the evening rush hour. The Delhi Metro also reported minor delays on some lines due to the weather.
Relief for Residents
Despite the disruptions, many residents expressed relief. The rain brought down the humidity levels and provided a break from the sweltering heat that had led to increased cases of heatstroke and dehydration. Locals were seen enjoying the weather, with some stepping out for a walk in the drizzle. The IMD has predicted more light to moderate rain in the coming days, which could further ease the heatwave conditions.
Weather Forecast
According to the IMD, the city is likely to witness partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers on Friday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 35 degrees Celsius. The weather department has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km per hour during the showers. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during the rain and avoid parking vehicles under trees.
The rain has also brought some relief to the water supply situation in the city, as water levels in the Yamuna have risen slightly. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation to prevent any flooding in low-lying areas along the riverbanks.
