Independent Vigneswaran Wins Nedungadu Seat in Puducherry

NEW DELHI: Independent candidate V Vigneswaran has won the Nedungadu Assembly constituency in Puducherry, securing 14,368 votes and defeating C. Chandira Priyanga of the All India N.R. Congress by a margin of 4,499 votes. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam candidate U. Kamaraj finished third with 1,865 votes, while Congress candidate Dinesh Kumar and others trailed significantly.

Upset in Traditional Stronghold

The result marks a notable upset in Nedungadu, a Scheduled Caste reserved constituency in Karaikal that has traditionally been a stronghold of the AINRC. Sitting MLA Chandira Priyanga, who had secured consecutive victories in 2016 and 2021, was unable to retain the seat this time, signalling a shift in voter preference in the largely agrarian constituency.

High Voter Turnout

Known for its paddy fields and irrigation-based economy, Nedungadu witnessed strong voter participation in the 2026 elections. Turnout reached 88.33 percent, slightly higher than the 87.6 percent recorded in 2021. Polling progressed steadily through the day, reflecting sustained voter engagement across the constituency.
