Election Squad Conducts Midnight Raid, Confiscates Saris in Namakkal
In a significant enforcement action, an Election Flying Squad team in Tiruchengodu, located within the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu, seized 100 brand-new saris during the early hours of Saturday. The saris, allegedly intended for distribution as gifts to voters, were confiscated following a swift response to a complaint lodged with the Namakkal District Election Control Room.
Tip-Off Leads to Swift Action
The operation was initiated after authorities received information about a large cardboard box being utilized for gift distribution in the Pavadi street area. Acting promptly on this tip, the squad mobilized to investigate the potential violation of election codes.
Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) and returning officer Lenin provided details of the raid, stating, "Flying Squad-1 officer Vetrivel, along with Assistant Inspector Srinivasan and other team members, conducted a meticulous midnight check to address the complaint." This proactive measure underscores the vigilance of election officials in curbing malpractices during the electoral process.
DMK Members Flee, Saris Seized
During the operation, members associated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) political party, who were in possession of the saris, abandoned the cardboard box and fled the scene upon the squad's arrival. The team successfully seized all 100 saris, which have an estimated market value of approximately Rs 40,000.
The confiscated items were subsequently handed over to the Tiruchengodu RDO Lenin for further legal processing, ensuring proper documentation and chain of custody in accordance with election regulations.
Police Case Registered, Investigation Underway
In the aftermath of the seizure, the Tiruchengodu town police have registered a formal case against DMK ward member V Dinesh (41). Authorities are actively investigating the incident to determine the full extent of the alleged electoral misconduct and identify any additional individuals involved.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of elections by preventing the distribution of gifts or inducements to voters, a practice strictly prohibited under Indian election laws. The swift action by the Flying Squad demonstrates a commitment to enforcing these rules and ensuring a fair electoral environment in the region.
