Early Wednesday morning, an election flying squad intercepted a goods autorickshaw traveling from Karamadai to Kalampalayam near Poosaripalayam in Coimbatore. Upon inspection, authorities discovered a staggering 523 kilograms of banned gutkha products concealed within the vehicle.
Police immediately seized the contraband, registered a formal case, and arrested the driver, identified as S Isravel, a 32-year-old resident of Tirunelveli. This seizure represents one of the largest single interceptions of banned tobacco products during the current election period in the region.
Additional Seizures in Coimbatore South Constituency
In the politically significant Coimbatore South constituency, where DMK candidate V Senthil Balaji and AIADMK candidate Amman K Arjunan are contesting, flying squads made further substantial seizures. Authorities confiscated Rs 63,100 in cash along with 102 power banks valued at approximately Rs 1.73 lakh.
All seized materials from this operation were promptly handed over to the returning officer for further investigation and appropriate legal action, ensuring proper chain of custody for election-related violations.
Widespread Enforcement Across Coimbatore District
The enforcement actions extended beyond specific constituencies, with flying squads conducting operations across all 10 assembly constituencies in Coimbatore district. During a 24-hour period from 6am on April 7 to 6am on April 8, authorities seized liquor worth Rs 9,561 and an additional Rs 19.59 lakh in cash.
