Coimbatore Election Authorities Intensify Crackdown on Voter Inducements
In a significant enforcement action, an election flying squad team in Coimbatore seized 173 stainless steel utensils from a goods autorickshaw on Sunday. The seizure occurred near Pullukadu in the city, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb electoral malpractices ahead of the polls.
Details of the Utensil Seizure
The squad, led by Deputy Corporation Commissioner Kumaresan, conducted an inspection of a vehicle parked near the Housing Board residential area at Pullukadu. This location falls within the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency, a key area under surveillance.
The stainless steel utensils were intended for distribution to voters, according to an official statement. The items were hidden in the vehicle, suggesting an attempt to bypass election regulations. Officials estimated the value of the seized utensils at Rs 1,45,000, underscoring the scale of the operation.
Additional Cash Seizure in Ramanathapuram
In a related incident, another election flying squad team seized Rs 94,000 from a biker during a vehicle check near Sungam at Ramanathapuram. The cash was confiscated as the biker failed to produce supporting documents to prove its source or the purpose of carrying it.
The seized cash has been handed over to the returning officer for further investigation, ensuring proper legal procedures are followed. This action demonstrates the comprehensive approach taken by authorities to monitor financial transactions that could influence voters.
Enhanced Surveillance Measures Across the District
A total of 180 flying squad teams have been deployed in the Coimbatore district to intensify surveillance and prevent the distribution of cash and gifts to voters. Inspections are being carried out continuously across all 10 constituencies in the district, with no area left unchecked.
With the assistance of central paramilitary forces, these flying squad teams are conducting rigorous checks to maintain electoral integrity. The collaboration aims to deter any attempts at voter inducement through illegal means.
Overall Impact and Seizure Statistics
So far, cash and gifts to the tune of more than Rs 2 crore have been seized in the Coimbatore district. This figure reflects the effectiveness of the enhanced monitoring efforts and the commitment to ensuring a free and fair election process.
The seizures serve as a strong warning against any attempts to distribute materials or cash to influence voter behavior. Authorities remain vigilant, with ongoing inspections and checks planned until the conclusion of the electoral process.
