High Voter Turnout Adds Unpredictability to Bengal's Phase 2 Polls
The second phase of voting to elect the next government of West Bengal has introduced an unexpected variable after the first phase recorded a staggering turnout of over 93%. This has transformed what should have been a comfortable zone for the Trinamool Congress into a battle of arithmetic and nerves. The ruling party is banking on an anti-Sentiment against the BJP, while the opposition BJP is capitalizing on anti-incumbency sentiment. Both parties are trying to decipher what an unprecedented voter turnout may signify.
Conventional Wisdom Challenged
Traditionally, a spike in voter turnout has favored the anti-incumbent. However, when turnout reaches levels never seen before, as happened in the 152 seats during the first phase, conventional calculations can go awry. Both parties' strategists seem to have grasped this, even though their public statements have been confident and boastful.
Key Districts in Focus
The seven districts voting today—Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, and East Burdwan—have been strongholds of the Trinamool Congress, with some pockets of resistance in North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, and Hooghly. The BJP has gained popularity among specific voter groups: the Matuas in Nadia and North 24 Parganas, the non-Bengali-speaking population in the industrial belt of North 24 Parganas, and agrarian areas in parts of Hooghly. The Indian Secular Front (ISF) is confined to the Bhangar-Canning belt on the southern fringes of Kolkata.
Trinamool's Historical Dominance
In the 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress won 123 of the 142 seats in these districts. However, after 15 years in power, the party has encountered resistance even in areas that have consistently supported it since it emerged as the main opposition to the Left Front. Party workers have had to put in extra effort in several constituencies in Kolkata, including Jorasanko, Shyampukur, Chowringhee, and Rashbehari.
A High-Stakes Contest
The entry of opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's constituency of Bhowanipore has added spice to what was expected to be a one-sided contest. With both parties locked in a tight battle, the final outcome remains uncertain.
