Union Minister Sonowal Unveils Major Waterways Infrastructure on Brahmaputra
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated three significant inland waterways infrastructure projects on National Waterway-2, the River Brahmaputra, on Friday. The launch event, held at Chowkidingee Playground in Dibrugarh, marked a pivotal step in advancing development while preserving cultural heritage in Assam.
Projects Aimed at Boosting Trade and Tourism
The three projects include the Customs and Immigration Complex at Bogibeel, the Customs and Immigration Complex at Dhubri, and the renovated Heritage Building of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) at Dibrugarh. Each facility is designed to enhance operational efficiency and support economic growth in the region.
Sonowal emphasized the dual focus on progress and heritage, stating, "Under PM Modi's leadership, we are moving ahead with a clear vision of Vikas and Virasat. We are striving toward progress and economic development while preserving our roots, our heritage, and our culture. The Brahmaputra is not just a river; it is our lifeline, our history, and our future."
Detailed Overview of the New Facilities
Customs and Immigration Complex at Bogibeel: This modern tourist-cum-cargo terminal integrates customs, immigration, and IWAI administrative functions into a single complex. Key features include dedicated arrival and departure waiting halls, cargo storage areas, administrative blocks, staff amenities, and integrated security systems. It aims to improve operational efficiency and facilitate trade under the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol routes.
Customs and Immigration Complex at Dhubri: Designed to enhance regulatory oversight, this complex is set to boost export-import operations in western Assam. It positions Dhubri as a strategic gateway for cross-border commerce with Bangladesh and Bhutan, strengthening regional trade ties.
Renovated Heritage Building at Dibrugarh: This project blends architectural restoration with upgraded operational infrastructure. It will serve both IWAI's administrative needs and promote riverine tourism, highlighting the cultural significance of the Brahmaputra.
Criticism of Past Governments and Future Vision
Sonowal criticized previous administrations for neglecting the Brahmaputra's potential, saying, "For six decades, our most precious asset — the mighty Brahmaputra — was neglected and underutilised by the Congress. Today, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are correcting that historic neglect. We are reclaiming the Brahmaputra as a national growth engine."
Under the National Waterways Act of 2016, twenty rivers in the Northeast have been declared National Waterways. Active development is underway on key waterways, including the Brahmaputra (NW-2), Barak (NW-16), Dhansiri (NW-31), and Kopili (NW-57), to unlock the region's vast waterway potential.
Expected Benefits and Regional Impact
The newly inaugurated projects are anticipated to reduce logistics costs, strengthen cross-border trade, and reinforce the Brahmaputra's role as a sustainable economic corridor for the entire Northeast. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance connectivity and economic development in Assam and neighboring areas.
