Defence Ministry Signs Major Contracts to Boost Army's Minefield Breaching Capability

In a significant move to modernize the Indian Army's combat effectiveness, the Defence Ministry on Tuesday finalized crucial contracts valued at nearly Rs 975 crore. These agreements are specifically aimed at procuring advanced minefield breaching equipment for the T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks, marking a pivotal advancement in the nation's defence infrastructure.

Contracts with Indigenous Firms for Critical Tank Equipment

The ministry inked deals with two key Indian companies: the defence public sector undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and the private firm Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Ltd. The contracts focus on the acquisition of TRAWL assemblies, which are essential components designed for integration with T-72 and T-90 tanks. The signing ceremony was conducted in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, underscoring the strategic importance of this procurement.

Enhancing Operational Capabilities with DRDO-Developed Technology

The TRAWL assembly represents a critical piece of equipment developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Its primary function is to generate vehicle-safe lanes through minefields that are equipped with anti-tank mines featuring proximity magnetic fuses. This technology significantly enhances the Army's ability to navigate and breach hostile terrain, thereby improving overall operational effectiveness during combat scenarios.

According to an official ministry statement, "The TRAWL assembly for T-72/T-90 tanks is a critical equipment that will generate additional capability to create vehicle safe lanes through minefields laid with anti-tank mines that have proximity magnetic fuses, thereby enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Army."

Boosting Indigenous Defence Manufacturing and Employment

This procurement is categorized as a 'Buy (Indian-indigenously designed, developed and manufactured)' initiative, highlighting the government's commitment to strengthening domestic defence production. The move not only modernizes India's military assets but also empowers local industries by fostering self-reliance in defence technology.

The ministry further emphasized the broader economic benefits, stating, "This project has immense potential for direct and indirect employment generation by encouraging the MSME sector through components' manufacturing." By involving micro, small, and medium enterprises in the supply chain, the initiative is expected to create numerous job opportunities and stimulate growth within the indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The signing of these contracts represents a strategic step forward in enhancing the Indian Army's tactical capabilities while simultaneously promoting national economic development through focused investment in homegrown defence solutions.
