Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, on Monday to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence ministers' meeting scheduled for Tuesday. The meeting is expected to address the ongoing situation in West Asia.
Key Agenda Items
The defence ministers of SCO member states will deliberate on several critical issues, including defence and security in the region, international peace, counter-terrorism, and enhancing defence cooperation among member nations. This year's SCO meeting takes place against the backdrop of the West Asia conflict. According to the defence ministry, the SCO, one of the largest political and economic organisations in the region, may discuss measures to mitigate the impact of the conflict.
India's Stance
Before his departure, Rajnath posted on X, stating, "Leaving for Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan... Shall highlight India’s commitment towards global peace, amidst the security challenges prevailing in the world, apart from conveying India’s consistent stance on Zero Tolerance for Terrorism and Extremism."
Ceremonial Reception
Upon arrival in Bishkek, Rajnath was accorded a traditional welcome and offered Borsok, a popular Kyrgyz delicacy, as part of the ceremonial reception. The defence minister is likely to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from some participating countries on the sidelines of the main event.
SCO Membership and Evolution
The SCO comprises India, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus. India became a full member of the organisation in 2017 and assumed its rotating chairmanship in 2023. Established in 2001 by China, Russia, and several Central Asian nations, the SCO has evolved into a significant regional bloc over the past two decades. The grouping's influence was further bolstered in 2023 with the inclusion of Iran as a full member during India's presidency.
