In a significant move that bridges India's colonial railway heritage with its independence narrative, the Ministry of Railways officially renamed the historic Kalka Mail as the Netaji Express on January 20, 2021. This iconic train, which operates between Howrah in West Bengal and Kalka in Haryana via Delhi, stands as one of the oldest and most cherished passenger services in the Indian Railways network.
The Historical Significance Behind the Renaming
The decision to rename the Howrah-Kalka Mail as Netaji Express was implemented on January 23, 2021, strategically timed to coincide with the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. This renaming carries profound historical weight, directly linked to India's freedom struggle.
According to official records from the national transporter, this particular train route holds the distinguished honor of being part of Netaji's great escape during the independence movement. On January 18, 1941, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose managed to escape from Calcutta (now Kolkata) and reached Gomoh station, where he discreetly boarded the Kalka Mail in disguise, marking a pivotal moment in India's journey toward freedom.

Modernization and Passenger Safety Enhancements
In keeping with contemporary railway standards and prioritizing passenger safety, the zonal railway undertook a significant upgrade to the train's coaches. Effective July 14, 2025, the conventional ICF (Integral Coach Factory) coaches were replaced with modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches.
These LHB coaches offer numerous advantages that significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers. They are celebrated for their increased spaciousness, upgraded passenger amenities, and superior comfort levels compared to their predecessors.
The distinctive features of LHB coaches include wider windows that provide passengers with panoramic views of the passing landscape and an advanced anti-telescopic mechanism specifically designed to prevent coaches from piercing into one another during unforeseen accidents, thereby improving overall safety standards.
