Israel has issued a rare public criticism of the United States over a new Gaza governance plan. The Israeli government strongly objects to the White House announcement of leaders who will oversee next steps in Gaza.
Israel's Formal Objection
The Israeli government stated clearly that the Gaza executive committee was not coordinated with Israel. Officials emphasized that this move runs contrary to Israeli policy. They did not provide specific details about their objections.
This represents unusual public disagreement between the close allies. Israel typically maintains strong coordination with Washington on regional matters.
Netanyahu's Direct Response
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has taken immediate action. He instructed Israel's foreign ministry to contact US Secretary of State Marco Rubio directly. This communication aims to address Israel's concerns about the Gaza board.
The US-Led Gaza Board
The White House announced the formation of this oversight group on Friday. Called the "Board of Peace," it will supervise temporary governance in Gaza. The region has maintained a fragile ceasefire since October.
Key members include:
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio
- Former President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff
- Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair
- Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner
- World Bank President Ajay Banga
Donald Trump serves as chair of this board. His White House originally unveiled this plan in October.
International Participation
The board features limited Israeli representation. Businessman and billionaire Yakir Gabay stands as the only Israeli member.
Several international leaders have accepted invitations to join:
- Argentina's President Javier Milei expressed gratitude for the invitation. He called it an honor to participate.
- Canada's Mark Carney has also agreed to become a founding member.
Other leaders received invitations but haven't confirmed participation. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was invited as a potential founding member. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi continues to consider whether to join.
This development highlights growing tensions in Gaza's post-conflict planning. Israel's public objection signals significant diplomatic friction with its closest ally.
