Ram Temple Donation Row: SIT Submits Preliminary Report to UP CM
Ram Temple Donation Row: SIT Submits Report to CM

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged irregularities in the collection of donations for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has submitted its preliminary report to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The report was handed over by the SIT chief, Additional Director General of Police (ADG) B. K. Singh, at the CM's official residence in Lucknow on Monday.

Details of the Preliminary Report

The preliminary report is said to contain findings from the initial phase of the investigation, which began earlier this month after the state government ordered a probe following complaints of financial mismanagement and coercion in donation drives. According to sources, the SIT has examined over 200 witnesses and scrutinized bank records of multiple trusts and individuals involved in the collection process.

The investigation was initiated after reports emerged that some private organizations and individuals were collecting donations in the name of the Ram Temple construction without proper authorization. The SIT has been tasked with identifying the culprits and recovering any misappropriated funds.

Government's Response

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has assured strict action against those found guilty. "The state government is committed to ensuring transparency in the donation process for the Ram Temple. No one will be allowed to misuse the faith of devotees," he said in a statement. The SIT has been given a deadline of three months to complete its investigation and submit a final report.

The Ram Temple Trust, which is overseeing the construction, has also welcomed the probe. A trust spokesperson said, "We have full faith in the investigation and will cooperate fully with the SIT. Any irregularities will be dealt with strictly."

Background of the Controversy

The controversy erupted in May 2026 when several devotees complained that they were forced to donate money or face harassment. Some alleged that fake receipts were issued and the funds were not reaching the official temple account. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted the SIT on June 10, 2026, to look into the matter.

The SIT has the authority to summon any individual or organization and can also conduct raids if necessary. So far, the team has seized several documents and electronic devices from the premises of suspected groups.

Political Reactions

Opposition parties have criticized the government for the delay in taking action. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said, "The SIT should have been formed earlier. The government is trying to cover up the issue by delaying the investigation." However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defended its actions, stating that the probe is being conducted fairly and transparently.

Next Steps

The SIT is expected to submit its final report by September 2026. Meanwhile, the state government has urged the public to report any suspicious donation collection activities through a dedicated helpline. The Ram Temple construction, which began in August 2020, is progressing on schedule, with the sanctum sanctorum expected to be completed by early 2027.
