Indian Envoy Vinay Kwatra Visits INS Sudarshini in Baltimore

Indian Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, visited the Indian Naval Ship Sudarshini at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, on June 28, 2026, and commended the crew for their efforts in fostering mutual cooperation and trust among nations. The ship is participating in the SAIL 250 Maryland event, which commemorates America’s 250th anniversary.

Ambassador Briefed on Lokayan 26 Expedition

According to a post on X by the Embassy of India in Washington, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini briefed Ambassador Kwatra on the progress of the Lokayan 26 expedition. This five-month-long transoceanic voyage has covered approximately 13,000 nautical miles so far. The briefing also included preparations for the upcoming SAIL 250 New York and SAIL Boston events.

“The Ambassador wished the crew the very best towards continuing their spectacular voyage and sustaining efforts to build bridges of mutual cooperation and trust amongst nations,” the embassy stated.

INS Sudarshini: A Symbol of Maritime Heritage

INS Sudarshini arrived at the Port of Baltimore on June 26 as part of the landmark transoceanic expedition, Lokayan 26. The ship is a three-masted barque, measuring 54 meters in length, equipped with 20 sails, 7.5 kilometers of rope, and 1.5 kilometers of steel wire rope. The total area of its sails is approximately 1,035 square meters (11,140 square feet).

Capable of operating under sail or power, the vessel carries a complement of five officers, 31 sailors, and 30 cadets embarked for training. It can remain at sea for at least 20 days at a time.

Strengthening India-U.S. Naval Ties

INS Sudarshini’s visit to Baltimore highlights India’s rich maritime heritage and the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Indian Navy and the United States Navy, according to a statement issued in New Delhi on Saturday. Before arriving in Baltimore, Sudarshini participated in Sail250 Virginia celebrations at Norfolk from June 19 to 23, joining tall ships from across the world and representing India in the Parade of Sail and the City Crew Parade.

Lokayan 26: A Voyage of Goodwill

The Indian Naval Sail Training Ship (INSTS) Sudarshini embarked on the transoceanic voyage Lokayan 26 from Kochi on January 20, 2026, with the objectives of promoting maritime outreach, strengthening international goodwill, and showcasing India’s seafaring traditions. The ship completed the trans-Atlantic leg when it arrived at the port of Antigua on May 27. During this leg, INSTS Sudarshini crossed the milestone of 10,000 nautical miles since its departure from Kochi.
