India and UAE Forge Digital Alliance with Data Embassy Proposal
India is taking a bold step into the future of digital diplomacy. The country is actively exploring the establishment of a data embassy in the United Arab Emirates. This move follows a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in New Delhi.
What Exactly Is a Data Embassy?

The Ministry of External Affairs released an official statement. It confirmed that both sides would explore setting up Digital Embassies under mutually recognised sovereignty arrangements.
In the 2023-24 Budget, the Indian government proposed facilitating data embassies. The aim is to enable seamless digital transfers and continuity for other nations. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is reportedly formulating a policy. This policy will allow countries and international companies to establish data embassies in India.
The proposed policy is expected to grant diplomatic immunity to the stored data. This would shield it from Indian regulations, ensuring its inviolability.
