India Expresses Concern for Nationals Abroad Following Military Escalation in West Asia
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita voiced serious concern on Sunday regarding the safety of Indian nationals residing or traveling abroad, following a significant military escalation in West Asia. The minister's remarks come in response to coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the death of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and plunged the region into heightened uncertainty.
MEA Closely Monitoring Volatile Situation
Speaking to reporters in Majuli, Margherita emphasized that the Ministry of External Affairs and relevant authorities are maintaining vigilant observation of the unfolding situation. "In view of the situation unfolding in West Asia, particularly after the strikes on Iran, the MEA is observing the entire scenario with vigilance, keeping a keen eye on the developments," the minister stated.
Margherita confirmed that specific instructions have already been issued for the protection and assistance of students, tourists, and all Indian citizens currently abroad. The coordinated military campaign, referred to as Operation Epic Fury, targeted Iranian nuclear and military installations in Tehran, Natanz, and other strategic locations, causing significant destruction and creating a volatile security environment across the region.
Direct Appeal to Indian Nationals in Affected Regions
The Union minister issued a direct appeal to Indian nationals, particularly students and travelers in affected regions, to maintain close contact with Indian diplomatic missions and strictly follow all safety advisories issued by the government. "Our priority is the safety and well-being of Indians abroad," Margherita affirmed, adding that genuine cases of distress would be addressed with all possible support through official government channels.
"In these times of uncertainty, accurate information and coordinated support are crucial," the minister reiterated, highlighting the importance of reliable communication during the ongoing crisis. The military escalation has already resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating eight fatalities in Israel following Iranian missile attacks, and additional explosions reported in Dubai, Doha, and Manama with airports being targeted.
Assurance to Communities with West Asia Ties
Margherita also made a specific appeal for calm among communities in Assam with family ties to West Asia, assuring them that all official channels were actively working to ensure prompt assistance. The minister's comments reflect growing international concern about the expanding conflict, which has prompted responses from multiple nations including the United Arab Emirates, which has called on Iran to "go back to your senses" following attacks on Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Kuwait.
The situation represents one of the most significant security challenges in recent years for Indian authorities responsible for citizen protection abroad, particularly given the substantial Indian diaspora and student population in the affected regions. The government's response underscores its commitment to proactive diplomatic engagement and citizen welfare during international crises.
