Warship Stealth Technology Transfer
India and Japan have sealed a significant defence deal focused on warship stealth technology, while jointly raising concerns about increasing militarisation in the East and South China seas. The agreement was signed on 2 July 2026 in New Delhi, marking a new chapter in bilateral defence cooperation.
Key Agreements Signed
Alongside the stealth deal, the two sides signed an agreement clearing the way for manufacturing Japan’s Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN) by Bharat Electronics Limited in India. This move is expected to enhance India's naval electronic warfare capabilities significantly.
According to officials, the UNICORN antenna system is a sophisticated signal intelligence and electronic support measures system used for detecting and analysing radar emissions. Its local production underlines the deepening of defence industrial collaboration between the two nations.
Concerns Over Maritime Militarisation
In a joint statement, both countries expressed serious concerns over the militarisation of the East and South China seas, calling for adherence to international law and peaceful resolution of disputes. The statement did not name any specific country but reaffirmed the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said, "We share a vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific. Our cooperation in defence technology and our shared concerns over maritime security reflect our commitment to regional stability."
Strengthening Strategic Partnership
The deals are part of broader efforts to strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Both sides also agreed to enhance joint military exercises and intelligence sharing. The stealth technology deal is expected to boost India's indigenous warship building programme, with potential applications for the Indian Navy's future stealth frigates and destroyers.
Experts view the agreement as a strategic move to counterbalance China's growing naval presence in the region. The collaboration on UNICORN antennas will also reduce India's dependence on foreign suppliers for critical electronic warfare systems.
Impact on Regional Dynamics
Analysts note that the timing of the deal underscores the urgency felt by both nations to address security challenges in the Indo-Pacific. The joint statement highlighted the need for a rules-based order and respect for sovereignty. The two countries pledged to work together on capacity building and maritime domain awareness in the region.
