India and Canada Poised to Finalize Major Economic Partnership Agreement
In a significant development for bilateral relations, India and Canada are expected to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the conclusion of this year. The announcement was made by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his official visit to India, which commenced in Mumbai before proceeding to New Delhi for a high-level meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.
Strategic Partnership Elevation and Business Engagements
Prime Minister Carney emphasized the transformative potential of the upcoming agreement during his engagements in Mumbai, where he met with a diverse group of stakeholders. These included Indian and Canadian chief executive officers, industry leaders, financial experts, innovators, educators, and representatives from Canadian Pension Funds operating in India.
"This represents an enormous opportunity for both our nations," Carney stated. "However, we are now transitioning to the next level. Our objective is to aim significantly higher and adopt a more strategic approach to our partnership. Consequently, following my election last year, our government prioritized the renewal of our relationship with India."
Historical Context and Key Agreements
The groundwork for this enhanced cooperation was laid during discussions between Modi and Carney on the sidelines of the G7 summit hosted in Canada. Both leaders agreed to reinvigorate efforts toward establishing a free trade agreement. Beyond the anticipated progress in CEPA negotiations, a multi-billion-dollar uranium procurement deal is poised to be a major outcome of Carney's visit, underscoring the deepening energy collaboration between the two countries.
Carney highlighted the continuity of this partnership, noting, "I extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi for the G7 Summit in Canada. Upon his arrival a few weeks later, we committed to re-engaging across critical domains such as security, energy, and technology. Subsequently, at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Modi and I inaugurated a landmark partnership with Australia focused on critical minerals and technology."

The bilateral discussions are also expected to address the geopolitical ramifications of the ongoing conflict in West Asia. It is noteworthy that Canada has aligned with the United States in supporting actions against Iran's nuclear program, a stance that contrasts with India's position.

"This naturally begins with food and energy, given Canada's status as a food and energy superpower," Carney explained. "It also extends to nuclear cooperation, positioning Canada as the most reliable long-term supplier of uranium for the development of large-scale reactors and small modular reactors."
