Indian Air Force Launches Process to Acquire New VIP Transport Jets
IAF Starts Process to Replace Old VIP Transport Aircraft Fleet

Indian Air Force Initiates Modernization of VIP Transport Fleet

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has officially commenced a significant modernization effort by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of 4-6 new Long Range Business Jets (LRBJs). This move aims to replace the aging fleet of VIP transport aircraft, ensuring secure, rapid, and reliable transportation for the military leadership and government dignitaries.

Phasing Out the Old Fleet

The current fleet, consisting of four Embraer Legacy 600 jets, has been in service for over two decades since its induction on September 21, 2005. These aircraft, named Meghdoot, Vayudoot, Nabhdoot, and Gagandoot, are now slated for a phased replacement. The RFI marks the initial step in identifying potential vendors and understanding available technologies before formal procurement begins.

Purpose and Specifications of the New Jets

According to the RFI posted on the IAF website, the new LRBJs will be used for VIP roles with a minimum passenger capacity of 19 individuals. They are intended to modernize the Air Headquarters Communication Squadron based at Palam, Delhi. Unlike the exclusive Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, known as 'Air India One', which are reserved for India's top three VVIPs—the President, Vice-President, and Prime Minister—the LRBJs will serve a broader range of senior officials.

Target Users and Operational Scope

The LRBJ aircraft are specifically designed for the movement of key government functionaries, including ministers of defence, finance, home, and external affairs, as well as the chiefs of the Indian Army, Navy, and IAF. This initiative underscores the IAF's commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and security in high-level transportation, addressing the evolving needs of national leadership.

By launching this procurement process, the IAF aims to ensure that its VIP transport capabilities remain robust and up-to-date, supporting India's strategic and diplomatic engagements with state-of-the-art aviation technology.
