Delhi is set to witness significant traffic disruptions over the next two days as the national capital rolls out a stringent security blanket for the arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This marks his first visit to India since the onset of the war in Ukraine.
Multi-Layered Security Ring for High-Profile Visit
Ahead of the Russian leader's two-day visit commencing Thursday, the Delhi Police have established a multi-layered security ring around the city. Senior officers confirmed that traffic routes for the presidential cavalcade have been thoroughly sanitized. While an official traffic advisory is pending, authorities have indicated one will be released prior to his arrival.
President Putin is scheduled to land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport around 4:30 pm on Thursday, December 4, 2025. A senior police officer detailed that a high-security grid will cover the convoy's routes and the hotel where he will stay. Coordination involves over 50 personnel from Russian security teams working alongside the Delhi Police and other Indian agencies.
Strategic Patrols and Expected Traffic Hotspots
To ensure safety, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and Anti-Terror squads will be deployed at strategic points across Delhi. Senior officers will oversee the entire operation.
The traffic impact is expected to begin as soon as Putin's flight touches down. Congestion and diversions are anticipated on major arteries including NH8, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Cantonment, and Sardar Patel Marg as the convoy heads from the airport. During evening hours, Panchseel Marg and Shanti Path may also face disruptions.
Friday's Itinerary to Extend Commuter Woes
The traffic snarls are likely to persist through Friday. The cavalcade's early morning movement towards Raj Ghat is expected to cause congestion around that area and on roads near India Gate, Delhi Gate, and ITO.
Later in the afternoon, President Putin will travel to Bharat Mandapam for a programme with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This engagement is predicted to slow traffic around Mathura Road, Mandi House, and Bhairo Road. The visit will conclude with a state dinner at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, potentially leading to diversions on roads approaching India Gate and Central Secretariat.
Commuters are strongly advised to plan their travel in advance, consider alternative routes, and allow for extra time to navigate the city during this high-security period.
