Vizhinjam Port Aims to Transform Kerala's Tourism with Proposed Cruise Village
Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant move to bolster tourism infrastructure, the Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to incorporate a major tourism component through plans for a global-standard cruise village. Port operator Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL) has formally approached the Kerala state government, seeking approximately 20 acres of land near the port to establish this advanced facility.
The company submitted a detailed proposal to Ports Minister V N Vasavan, the ports department secretary, and Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL). According to sources, the proposal is currently under active consideration by the authorities. However, officials have indicated that a final decision may be delayed due to the impending announcement of the assembly election schedule, with an agreement unlikely to be reached before the elections conclude.
Strategic Development for Long-Term Growth
The cruise village is envisioned as a key element of the port's long-term development strategy. Sources close to the project revealed that the facility is expected to be developed alongside the completion of subsequent phases of port expansion. This integration aims to seamlessly blend cruise tourism with the port's core operations, creating a synergistic environment for maritime and travel activities.
Industry observers believe that this initiative could position Vizhinjam as a premier cruise tourism gateway on international sea routes. These routes connect vital regions such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe, potentially making Vizhinjam a hub for global cruise liners. The cruise village will function as a dedicated passenger hub, catering specifically to international cruise vessels calling at the port.
Infrastructure and Facilities for International Travelers
The proposed cruise village is designed to include comprehensive amenities to support international travelers. Plans feature immigration and customs clearance counters, spacious passenger lounges, efficient baggage handling systems, and robust security infrastructure. Additionally, a bus terminal will be developed within the complex to facilitate transportation for passengers to major tourist destinations across Thiruvananthapuram city and nearby areas.
This facility is expected to provide easy access to popular attractions, including the pristine beaches of Kovalam, heritage sites in Thiruvananthapuram, and various cultural landmarks throughout the district. The cruise village will also incorporate a tourism-focused marketplace, showcasing locally made products, handicrafts, and souvenirs to promote regional artisans and businesses.
Global Standards and Local Integration
Globally, cruise villages typically operate as integrated tourism zones that combine transport facilities, retail outlets, restaurants, cultural spaces, and tourist information centers in a single waterfront complex. Many such facilities also include entertainment zones, food courts featuring local cuisine, currency exchange services, medical facilities, and guided tour counters to assist passengers during their visits.
Currently, India has four major cruise terminals located in Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, and Chennai. The addition of Vizhinjam's cruise village would expand this network, enhancing the country's maritime tourism capabilities. The deep-water port at Vizhinjam, developed under a public-private partnership model, is India's first dedicated container transshipment terminal and is being constructed in multiple phases.
Once fully completed, the port is anticipated to emerge as a major maritime hub in the region, opening up new opportunities in tourism, logistics, and related sectors. This development aligns with broader efforts to boost economic growth and cultural exchange through enhanced connectivity and world-class infrastructure.
