The much-anticipated Howrah-Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper train is poised to begin its commercial services, marking a significant upgrade in rail connectivity between West Bengal and Assam. What Are The Baggage Allowances On The New Sleeper Train?
With the inaugural run imminent, a key question for prospective travellers revolves around luggage limits. Shibram Majhi, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Eastern Railway, has clarified that there will be no special baggage rules for this new service. Passengers must adhere to the standard Indian Railways luggage regulations that are currently in force.
The 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper, which can accommodate 823 passengers, offers three classes of travel: AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier. The free luggage allowance varies significantly by class:
- AC First Class (1A): Passengers can carry up to 70 kilograms of luggage free of charge.
- AC 2-Tier (2A): The free allowance is up to 50 kilograms.
- AC 3-Tier (3A): Travellers are permitted up to 40 kilograms of baggage without extra cost.
Understanding Indian Railways' Luggage Policy
The railway system provides a marginal allowance beyond the free limit, offering a cushion to passengers. One can carry an additional 10 to 15 kilograms by paying 1.5 times the standard luggage charge, and this extra weight does not attract a penalty.
However, carrying baggage beyond the combined free and marginal allowance, or transporting luggage without proper booking, will result in penal charges as per official railway rules. It is crucial for passengers to be aware of these limits to avoid inconvenience and extra costs during their journey.
A Train Designed for Longer Journeys
This sleeper variant is designed for extended travel. As announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on January 1, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is intended to cover distances of approximately 1000 to 1500 kilometres. The Howrah-Guwahati route fits perfectly within this range, promising a faster and more comfortable alternative to existing trains.
The train's composition includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one AC first-class coach. Its introduction is a strategic move to enhance regional connectivity, potentially reducing travel time by up to three hours and making the scenic Northeast more accessible to tourists and business travellers alike.
