Soaring Airfares in Ranchi Disrupt Summer Travel Plans Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Ranchi Summer Travel Hit by High Airfares, Geopolitical Tensions

Ranchi Summer Travel Plans Derailed by Skyrocketing Airfares

As summer vacations approach, travellers from Ranchi are encountering a significant obstacle: a sharp increase in airfares. This surge is primarily driven by airlines implementing fuel charges on both domestic and international flights, a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The situation has compelled many to either postpone their trips or explore alternative transportation options.

Drastic Price Hikes on Key Routes

Flight tickets from Ranchi to Delhi, which typically range from Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000, have now soared to between Rs 8,800 and Rs 11,000 across various airlines. Similarly, fares for Kolkata-bound flights have skyrocketed, reaching a maximum of Rs 14,000 compared to the usual around Rs 4,000. Popular domestic destinations such as Jammu and Kashmir, Shimla, Manali, and northeastern states remain highly sought after by Ranchi residents, but the lack of direct flights forces travellers to rely on connecting flights via hubs like Delhi or Kolkata, exacerbating the cost burden.

Travel Industry Voices Concerns

Pratik Jain, a travel operator in Ranchi, highlighted the challenges faced by travellers. "Most destinations do not have direct flights from Ranchi. With airfares increasing, many have cancelled their trips, waiting for the situation to stabilise, or are opting for trains instead," he explained. Jain also noted that global geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving Iran and the US-Israel, are reshaping travel preferences. This uncertainty has led to cancellations of trips to European countries, with customers now showing more interest in Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand and Vietnam.

Declining Inquiries and Seasonal Impact

Another tour agent, Mayank Vijayvargiya, reported a stark contrast from previous years. "Unlike the rush of inquiries since mid-March last year, I have received only two so far this time. One group inquired about a Kerala trip in May, and the other about Dubai in June. The decreased inquiries are a cause for concern. If the situation does not improve in the next 15-20 days, the tourism season will be a disaster for us," he added. This downturn underscores the broader impact on the local tourism industry, with potential long-term effects if airfare trends persist.

The combination of elevated airfares and geopolitical instability is creating a perfect storm for summer travel from Ranchi, prompting a shift in consumer behavior and raising alarms within the tourism sector.
