Goa Shack Owners Allege Tourists Harassed Russian Woman Before Violent Confrontation
The Shack Owners Welfare Society (SOWS) in Calangute, Goa, has made a significant claim regarding a recent assault incident involving beach shack workers and tourists from Bengaluru. According to SOWS, the violent altercation that occurred last Tuesday was precipitated by the tourists harassing a Russian woman who was lounging on a beach bed. The society asserts that the entire sequence of events is clearly documented in CCTV footage and has called for police action against the tourists involved.
CCTV Footage and Eyewitness Account Corroborate Harassment Claims
In a detailed statement released on Saturday, SOWS general secretary John Lobo emphasized that the incident unfolded after shack staff intervened to protect the Russian tourist from unwanted advances. The society has provided video evidence, including clips from surveillance cameras, which appear to support their version of events. A video shared by SOWS features the Russian woman explaining that she was seated on a deck bed when a drunk tourist approached her, making her feel uncomfortable.
The woman recounted, "I tried to tell him to go away, but he persisted. Seeing my distress, one of the shack staff came over to help and asked the tourist to stop. This led to a heated argument." She further described how the situation escalated rapidly: "The tourist left and returned with five or six friends. They lifted a beach umbrella and began attacking the staff. Other workers then got involved in the fight. My friends nearby advised me to leave the area for my safety. Later, I learned that the staff were arrested despite not being at fault."
Aftermath: Arrests and Licence Suspension Following the Incident
The confrontation resulted in serious consequences, with one of the tourists sustaining head injuries that required medical attention. In response, local authorities arrested three shack workers and suspended the operating licence of the popular beach shack involved. However, SOWS is contesting these actions, arguing that the staff were merely defending the tourist and themselves from aggression.
John Lobo has formally demanded that the police register a complaint against the tourists, citing the CCTV footage as clear proof of their misconduct. "The footage shows the tourists initiating the violence after being confronted about harassing the Russian woman. Our staff acted in good faith to protect her," Lobo stated. The society is urging a review of the case to ensure justice for the shack workers, who they believe are being unfairly penalized.
