Varanasi's Eco-Friendly Chandravati Ghat Nears Completion, Set to Boost Jain Tourism
A significant development in spiritual tourism is underway in Varanasi, as the Chandravati Ghat, a modern and eco-friendly riverfront project, is nearing completion and will soon be accessible to the general public. Constructed at a cost of Rs 17.06 crore, this 200-meter-long, three-tier ghat is being developed under the Jain Circuit initiative by the Uttar Pradesh tourism department. Officials report that the project is approximately 99% complete, marking a major step forward in promoting lesser-known religious sites while adhering to sustainable practices.

The Chandravati Ghat is located along the Ganga River at the birthplace of the 8th Jain Tirthankar, Bhagwan Chandraprabhu. According to officials involved, the structural work for the three-tier ghat has been fully completed, including the construction of the third level platform. Remaining tasks, such as flooring and railing installation, will be carried out by the Jain Shwetambar Tirth Society. This project is designed as a modern riverfront that serves dual purposes: protecting temple boundaries from erosion and preventing Ganga water from entering the temple premises.

It is associated with the birth and life journey of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu, including events like Chyavan Kalyanak, Janma Kalyanak, Diksha Kalyanak, and Kevalgyan Kalyanak. The temple at this site is over 500 years old, and according to Jain scriptures, Bhagwan Chandraprabhu was born to King Mahasen and Queen Lakshmana Devi, later attaining Keval Gyan (omniscience) through penance under a Nag tree on the Ganga banks.

Minister Singh credited the project's progress to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the commitment of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to expanding spiritual tourism. He noted that Varanasi recorded over 17.3 crore tourist arrivals in 2025, reflecting the city's growing global identity and tourism appeal.
