Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Sees Major Revenue & Tourist Growth in 2025
DHR Revenue & Tourist Numbers Surge in 2025

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Reports Substantial Growth in Revenue and Tourism for 2025

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), a UNESCO World Heritage site, has announced a remarkable increase in both revenue and tourist numbers for the calendar year 2025 compared to the previous year. This surge highlights a growing trend towards heritage and premium tourism experiences in the region.

Financial and Visitor Statistics Show Positive Trends

According to official data released by DHR, the railway's earnings rose significantly from Rs 21.2 crore in 2024 to Rs 24.6 crore in 2025. This represents a substantial financial uplift for the historic mountain railway.

Tourist footfall also experienced a sharp increase, climbing from 1.7 lakh visitors in 2024 to 2.1 lakh visitors in 2025. This growth underscores the rising popularity of the DHR as a premier tourist destination.

Key Drivers Behind the Growth

DHR director Rishav Choudhary attributed this success to several strategic initiatives. Improved tourism infrastructure has played a crucial role, along with the development of premium heritage experiences that appeal to discerning travelers.

Choudhary emphasized the importance of balancing heritage conservation with modern tourism needs. "By investing in infrastructure and people, we are not only transporting passengers but also contributing directly to the local economy," he stated.

Additionally, stronger engagement with local communities has been instrumental in fostering sustainable tourism practices and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Ongoing Restoration and Expansion Efforts

To further enhance passenger comfort while preserving its historic legacy, restoration work is currently underway on 15 additional heritage coaches. This initiative aims to maintain the railway's authentic charm while meeting contemporary standards.

The rise in tourist arrivals has also created new employment opportunities and boosted small businesses across the hill region, contributing to broader economic development.

International Promotion at SATTE 2025

In a significant move to expand its global presence, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway will participate for the first time in the South Asia Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) in New Delhi. The event is scheduled to take place at Yashobhoomi from February 25 to 27, 2025.

"We will highlight the rich history of DHR and introduce our new ride experiences," Choudhary said regarding the railway's participation in SATTE. This international platform is expected to attract more global tourists and showcase the unique heritage of the DHR.

The combination of financial growth, increased visitor numbers, and strategic international promotion positions the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as a key player in India's heritage tourism sector, with promising prospects for continued expansion in the coming years.
