Madikeri District Administration Reviews Ambitious Coorg Village Tourism Development Plan
In a significant move to enhance the region's tourism appeal, Deputy Commissioner SJ Somashekar conducted a comprehensive review of plans to develop Coorg Village, located near the iconic Raja's Seat in Madikeri. The meeting, held at the DC office on Wednesday, focused on strategic upgrades to transform the area into a premier tourist destination.
Strategic Focus on Infrastructure and Visitor Experience
During the session, DC Somashekar emphasized the critical need to improve Coorg Village as a dedicated tourist spot. He issued specific directives to the project director of the Nirmiti Centre, outlining a multi-faceted development approach. Key instructions included the construction of a modern ticket counter, establishment of an information center, and creation of a tourist-friendly food center to enhance visitor convenience.
Security and sustainability measures were also prioritized, with the DC mandating the installation of CCTV cameras for safety and solar lights for eco-friendly illumination. Additionally, plans were discussed for arranging organized vehicle parking facilities and launching a miniature train to provide an engaging experience for tourists exploring the area.
Committee Recommendations and Operational Adjustments
The meeting saw active participation from key officials including SP Bindu Mani, AC Nithin Chakki, and members of the Raja's Seat development committee. SP Bindu Mani proposed a practical operational shift, suggesting the relocation of the ticket counter from near Raja's Seat to Coorg Village to streamline visitor management and improve accessibility.
H Shashidhar, deputy director of the horticulture department, provided context on previous development efforts. "The original intention was to develop Coorg Village and provide facilities to local self-help groups," he explained. "However, when no one came forward initially, spaces were allocated on a rental basis to existing local businesses and interested parties."
Broader Tourism Revitalization Vision
Committee member Monthi Ganesh expanded the discussion beyond Coorg Village, advocating for the simultaneous revitalization of Nehru Mantapa, another prominent tourist attraction in the city. She stressed that comprehensive steps must be implemented to effectively attract and retain tourists, suggesting a coordinated approach across multiple sites.
The development initiative represents a concerted effort by Madikeri's district administration to leverage local heritage and natural beauty for economic growth through tourism. By focusing on infrastructure improvements, security enhancements, and visitor amenities, officials aim to create a more appealing and functional destination that showcases the unique cultural and scenic assets of the Coorg region.
