Thiruvananthapuram: A significant milestone in Kerala's tourism and heritage conservation efforts is set to unfold as the renovated Chilakoor Tunnel at Varkala prepares for its grand inauguration. The state government has announced that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officially open the first phase of the ambitious 280-kilometer Akkulam–Chettuva Waterway project on February 26. This event marks a pivotal moment in revitalizing the region's inland waterways for tourism and connectivity.
Inauguration and Tourism Initiatives at Chilakoor Beach Park
The inauguration ceremony will take place at the scenic Chilakoor Beach Park in Varkala, where a series of innovative tourism initiatives will be launched. These initiatives are centered around the meticulously restored tunnel and its surrounding beach area, aiming to transform the location into a premier destination for both domestic and international visitors.
Engineering Marvel from Travancore Era Restored
The 350-meter Chilakoor Tunnel is an engineering structure with deep historical roots, dating back to the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. Originally serving as a crucial link for inland navigation, it facilitated the movement of passengers and freight across southern Kerala. Under the state's comprehensive inland waterways development programme, the tunnel has been renovated to navigable condition, with authorities anticipating its emergence as a dual-purpose heritage site and tourism attraction.
Preservation Efforts by Kerala Waterways Infrastructure Limited
The renovation project was executed by Kerala Waterways Infrastructure Limited (KWIL), a strategic joint venture between the state government and Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial). Officials emphasized that the restoration work was conducted with utmost care to preserve the tunnel's historical character and integrity. KWIL director S Suhas highlighted the structure's logistical and historical significance, noting that it was a key consideration during the restoration process.
"The tunnel has re-emerged as a landmark heritage destination. Considering its importance, the surface was not disturbed by embedded fixtures," Suhas stated, underscoring the commitment to maintaining the original aesthetics while enhancing functionality.
Electric Boat Rides and Immersive Light-and-Sound Show
As part of the inauguration, Cial will introduce an eco-friendly electric boat ride through the tunnel, offering visitors a unique and serene experience. Additionally, a state-of-the-art light-and-sound show, developed at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, will be launched. This immersive show will utilize projection mapping technology on the tunnel's inner surface to depict the life and teachings of renowned social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, along with his profound association with Varkala.
The presentation will also showcase the region's rich heritage and Kerala's broader cultural legacy, providing an educational and entertaining experience for all ages. Visitors will enjoy the show while traveling through the tunnel in a specially designed 20-seater electric boat, developed by a Kochi-based start-up, blending modern innovation with historical exploration.
Enhanced Visitor Facilities at Chilakoor Beach
To complement the tunnel experience, a new boat jetty and an upgraded beach park have been established at Chilakoor Beach. These facilities are designed to enhance the overall visitor experience, promoting the area as a comprehensive tourism destination.
