Disney World's Buzz Lightyear Ride Reopens with Major Upgrades After 8-Month Refurbishment
Few experiences capture the pure joy of childhood like stepping into a Star Cruiser, engaging in epic Beyblade battles, collecting Toy Story memorabilia, or battling Zurg's minions at Disney World. Now, after eight months of extensive behind-the-scenes work, one of Magic Kingdom's most beloved attractions has returned, reminding visitors why Disney parks feel like stepping directly into a dream.
What is Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin?
Disney World's Tomorrowland has received a significant enhancement with the reopening of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom. The interactive dark ride officially welcomed guests again on April 8, 2026, following an eight-month refurbishment period that began in August 2025.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin is an immersive dark ride located in Tomorrowland at Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Participants board spinning Star Cruiser vehicles, equip themselves with laser blasters, and aim at glowing targets representing Zurg's forces from the Toy Story franchise. The objective is to accumulate points by accurately hitting these targets and ultimately defeating the Evil Emperor Zurg.
Major Technological Enhancements and New Features
The most notable addition to the revamped attraction is a brand-new friendly robot character named Buddy, developed through a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios. According to the Disney Parks Blog, Buddy appears in an additional scene within the ride, where he trains aspiring space rangers in a dedicated practice zone before the main action commences.
The ride vehicles themselves have undergone a complete Toy Story-inspired redesign. Each Star Cruiser now features onboard video screens that display live scores and other engaging details during the experience. The handheld blasters have been significantly upgraded for improved accuracy and responsiveness.
"With always-on lasers, two distinct blaster colors per Star Cruiser, and new lighting, sound, and vibration effects, players can clearly see where they're aiming, determine if their aim is correct, and receive immediate feedback when they successfully hit a target," the Disney Parks Blog explained.
The targets throughout the ride have been transformed from static Zurg symbols into dynamic elements that illuminate and react visibly when struck, adding an extra layer of excitement and visual appeal to the gameplay.
Enhanced Guest Experience and Perfect Timing
For the first time in the attraction's history, guests can now capture their final score and ranking through a new PhotoPass photo opportunity, as highlighted by the Disney Parks Blog. This feature allows visitors to preserve their Space Ranger achievements as lasting memories of their Disney World adventure.
The timing of these substantial updates coincides perfectly with the upcoming theatrical release of Toy Story 5 on June 19. The original attraction first opened in November 1998, making these enhancements particularly significant for the over-25-year-old favorite. The film will reunite Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, and the entire Toy Story crew as they navigate children's increasing fascination with modern gadgets.
Enthusiastic fans flocked to the attraction immediately upon its reopening, with substantial queues forming quickly on opening day. These comprehensive upgrades successfully blend the ride's classic nostalgic charm with cutting-edge modern technology, ensuring that Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin remains a fresh and exciting experience for both new visitors and longtime Disney enthusiasts.
