Adi Kailash Yatra to Commence on May 1 with Mandatory Inner Line Permits
The sacred Adi Kailash Yatra in Pithoragarh district is set to begin on May 1, with the local administration implementing strict regulations for pilgrims. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) -- an official travel document required to enter protected or restricted areas for a limited period -- has been made mandatory for all participants. This measure is crucial as the pilgrimage route traverses sensitive locations along the Indo-Tibet (China) border, necessitating enhanced security and oversight.
Streamlined Permit Process and Administrative Preparations
Dharchula Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ashish Joshi announced that ILPs will be issued both online and offline to facilitate a smooth and organized visitor movement. "We are putting in place comprehensive arrangements related to infrastructure, safety, and visitor management to ensure a seamless experience," Joshi stated. He has directed all concerned authorities to complete all preparatory work well ahead of the yatra's commencement.
The permit verification will be conducted at multiple checkpoints along the route beyond Dharchula, including key locations such as Gunji, Nabi, and Jolingkong. This multi-point inspection system aims to maintain strict adherence to regulations and enhance security throughout the pilgrimage.
Tourist Influx and Infrastructure Readiness
District Tourism Officer Kirti Arya provided insights into the expected tourist numbers, stating that approximately 50,000 visitors are anticipated to visit the revered sites of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat during the yatra period. To accommodate this significant influx, local homestays and lodges have been instructed to ensure hygienic and comfortable accommodation for pilgrims.
"We have urged all visitors to actively participate in protecting the pristine environment of the region," Arya emphasized, highlighting the administration's focus on sustainable tourism practices amidst the growing footfall.
Background and Rising Popularity of Adi Kailash
Adi Kailash, situated at an altitude of 5,945 meters in the Vyas valley, is often visited in conjunction with the sacred Om Parvat. The area's accessibility improved significantly after it was connected by road in 2020, paving the way for increased pilgrimage activity.
The site received a substantial boost in visibility following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in 2023, which catalyzed a remarkable surge in tourist numbers. Statistics reveal a sharp increase from nearly 1,000 visitors in 2022 to 2,500 in 2023, followed by a dramatic rise to 25,500 in 2024 and 36,600 in 2025. This exponential growth underscores the growing prominence of Adi Kailash as a key pilgrimage destination in the region.
The upcoming yatra represents a concerted effort by authorities to balance the spiritual aspirations of pilgrims with the necessary regulatory and security measures, ensuring a safe and memorable experience for all participants.
