In a dramatic turn of events, approximately 120 tourists found themselves stranded near Sandakphu in Darjeeling following an intense night of heavy snowfall. The Singalila Land Rovers Owners' Association (SLROA) spearheaded a critical rescue mission on Saturday, successfully evacuating all individuals to safety. As a precautionary measure, local authorities have implemented a temporary closure of access routes to Sandakphu, redirecting all visitors to the alternative location of Tumling.
Unprecedented Snowfall Intensity Halts Travel
Sandakphu, renowned as Bengal's highest peak, was transformed into a winter wonderland with nearly one foot of fresh snow blanketing the landscape on Saturday morning. This snowfall marked the season's longest and most severe episode, according to SLROA president Chandan Pradhan. He detailed that the snowfall commenced around 10 pm on Friday and persisted relentlessly until approximately 11 am on Saturday, significantly escalating snow accumulation along critical pathways.
"The intensity this time was substantially higher compared to earlier spells this year," Pradhan emphasized. "Our dedicated teams sprang into action immediately, focusing on clearing obstructed routes and rescuing the stranded tourists. We managed to bring the first group down safely by 3 pm, and rescue operations are continuing to ensure everyone is accounted for."
Logistical Challenges and Ongoing Efforts
The situation unfolded as nearly 15 vehicles had proceeded towards Sandakphu on Friday, with an additional five stationed near Thakum, located about 8 kilometers away from the peak. Pradhan noted that while vehicles from Sandakphu are gradually returning, the Thakum route remains completely inaccessible and is projected to stay blocked for at least two more days due to the heavy snow cover.
This recent snowfall event follows earlier occurrences on February 21 and 24 this year, but the latest episode has been notably more severe, prompting swift emergency responses. The SLROA's efforts highlight the challenges of managing tourism in high-altitude regions prone to sudden weather changes.
