A heartbreaking sequence of events has led to the deaths of a recently married couple from Bengaluru, with the tragedies occurring roughly a thousand kilometres apart. The incident, which has sparked police investigations in two states, began with the suicide of a 26-year-old woman in Bengaluru and culminated in her husband taking his own life in Nagpur a day later.
A Honeymoon Cut Short and Mounting Tensions
The couple, who had just celebrated a lavish wedding ceremony in Bengaluru, embarked on their honeymoon to Sri Lanka. However, the trip was abruptly cut short when the husband allegedly discovered details about his wife's past relationship. This led to significant disputes between the pair, forcing them to return to Bengaluru on December 21.
Back in the city, the situation deteriorated further. The young woman reportedly faced persistent humiliation and mistreatment from her husband's family. Relatives have stated that despite the harassment, she resisted seeking a divorce due to concerns about family honour and societal pressure.
A Devastating Chain of Events Unfolds
On Thursday, the woman died by suicide at her home in Bengaluru. Her death triggered immediate protests outside her husband's residence, where her parents and other relatives gathered, demanding the immediate arrest of her husband and in-laws. Police sources confirmed that an initial probe suggested she was driven to the extreme step by rejection and harassment from her husband's family.
Following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the woman's death, her husband fled Bengaluru with his mother and brother, heading to Nagpur in Maharashtra. The very next day, on Friday, the husband died by suicide in Nagpur. In a further tragic turn, his mother also attempted to end her life at a relative's home in Nagpur. She was rescued and remains hospitalised in critical condition.
Families React as Police Investigations Proceed
Reacting to the rapid developments, the deceased woman's mother expressed a complex mix of grief and resignation. She remarked, "They realised their mistakes. My daughter showed him so much love; he couldn't have lived after her death."
Authorities in both Karnataka and Maharashtra are now actively investigating the interconnected cases. The police are looking into the allegations of harassment that preceded the first death, as well as the circumstances that led to the subsequent suicide and suicide attempt in Nagpur. The case has cast a stark light on the intense pressures and conflicts that can sometimes surround marital relationships and family dynamics.
