In a remarkable achievement, Dr Tushar Ambadkar, a wildlife and bird photographer and homoeopathy practitioner based in Amravati, has secured first prize in the prestigious contest organized by National Geographic India. His captivating photograph of two Wood Sandpiper birds engaged in a territorial dispute triumphed in the 'Capture in Motion' single photo category, outshining thousands of entries from across the nation.
Award-Winning Image Captured at Bor Dam Wetland
The winning shot was taken during the winter of 2022 at the Bor Dam wetland, renowned for its rich biodiversity. The jury was particularly impressed by the image's impeccable timing, artistic composition, and natural elegance, which collectively set it apart from the competition. As a result, the photograph will be prominently featured in official National Geographic albums, calendars, and digital platforms, granting Ambadkar significant national recognition and global exposure. Notably, this marked Ambadkar's inaugural participation in a large-scale photography competition.
From Medicine to Photography: A Journey of Passion and Patience
Dr Ambadkar, an advanced homoeopathy practitioner, embarked on his wildlife and bird photography journey in 2011 at the age of 24, alongside his friend Dr Prajak Raul. In an interview, he revealed that what began as a means to alleviate work stress and practice meditation gradually evolved into a serious passion. He emphasized that the award-winning image required careful pre-visualization and immense patience—essential qualities in bird photography. "I often venture into the woods four to five times a week, equipped with my camera. Additionally, I dedicate my holidays to capturing the serene chaos of wildlife," Ambadkar shared.

Balancing his dual careers with equal dedication, Ambadkar has spent nearly 15 years refining his photographic skills. His work has previously been featured in esteemed publications such as Asian Photography and Smart Photography magazines. Beyond his personal achievements, he actively mentors aspiring photographers through hands-on field training sessions, sharing his expertise and fostering new talent in the field.
